Shiatsu is a favorite form of massage for those who have experienced it. Shiatsu provides a deep
relaxation of both the body and mind. As an added benefit, my sessions are 75 minutes in length so
it is an intensely relaxing and calming experience. The benefits and the understanding of how Shiatsu
works are not widely known so I put together some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) to help you
learn more about this form of massage that is based on an over 3000 year old practice. If you have a
question you don’t see on here, please feel free call or email me and I would be happy to explain more.
SHIATSU FAQ’s (Shee-aht-sue)
Q. I am used to Swedish, Deep Tissue, or Sports massages. Does Shiatsu feel as good as these? And
will it provide me with what I’m looking for?
YES- Shiatsu is deeply therapeutic, even though it is done differently than other types of massage. It is
a highly-effective and supportive massage for those who are athletic, holding tension in the muscles, or
even just want a relaxing, soothing experience.
Q. What type of people will benefit from a Shiatsu massage?
Everyone will benefit from a Shiatsu massage, however, I have found that people who suffer from an
over active or anxiety ridden mind especially benefit from Shiatsu. Since this form of massage addresses
your whole being, it helps to calm a busy mind.
Q. How can it be a great massage if I leave my clothes on??!
There is no draping involved, or oils rubbed into the skin, yet it feels great; the body’s innate healing
mechanisms respond to the direct pressing and stimulation of Shiatsu technique. If you have never
received a massage before, or may be apprehensive about taking off your clothes to experience
massage, Shiatsu will be great for you. Loose or comfortable clothing should be worn to your session.
Q. Why would I want to get a Shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu is like massaging your ENTIRE BEING- your body, your mind, and your spirit. These parts of you
are all interconnected, and affect each other when things get out of balance. Shiatsu feels great on the
body, with the added benefits of calming the mind and smoothing out the emotions. You will leave
feeling very different than you did coming in! PLUS, Shiatsu tends to stick with you- the effects of it can
be felt for days after the actual treatment.
Q. What exactly is Shiatsu???!
Shiatsu is a type of massage therapy done on a table. It feels wonderful to receive, as it relaxes and
energizes your entire being. Its focus is on stimulating the skin, muscles, and meridians of the body to
release tension and blockages in your body, leaving you with a renewed, lasting sense of calm and well-
being.
Q. What is a meridian?
Meridians are like rivers of energy that flow throughout the body. Shiatsu massage stimulates and
encourages the proper flow of qi (energy) by applying comfortable pressure along these pathways.
Q. Does it hurt? What do you do with your hands?
No, it is not typically a painful type of massage. Deep pressure can be applied, but is not necessary
for the body to let go of tension. I use primarily my fingers, thumbs and palms to massage along
the meridian pathways. I incorporate other modalities as well, such as MayoFascial Release, and the
common Swedish techniques of Tapotement and Vibration.

Since becoming certified in Massage Therapy, with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I’ve been sharing Shiatsu Massage, along with Reiki healing energy, for about 6 years now.   Within the last year, I have also come to know Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils, and I incorporate these into my practice as well. I offer a unique experience of relaxation and healing, to get the body feeling better and bring a lasting sense of calm to the mind.

A typical session with me takes at least an hour- Shiatsu is an ancient Japanese massage technique that recalibrates the body’s natural flow of chi (or “qi”). By applying finger, thumb and palm pressure along specific areas of the body, the chi is tapped into, bringing forth the whole-body’s natural wisdom and healing mechanisms.  Some gentle stretching is also incorporated.  The body will feel fresh and opened up; the mind more calm and relaxed.

If you’ve never had a massage before, or know someone else who hasn’t, this is a great time to come see what Shiatsu is all about!  It’s done with the clothing on, so it may seem like a good ‘beginner’ massage to some.  There are great benefits to all the services offered at Artifex Manuum; Shiatsu will work with and compliment other therapies.

Reviews for Angie

This was the best Shiatsu massage that I’ve ever experienced. This massage was very relaxing yet at the same time very refreshingly energizing. Angela is a wonderful healer with great energy and knowledge. Angela’s experience with other healing modalities such as using essential oils made my Shiatsu massage all the better. The music was soft and pleasant, the oils were phenomenal and the energy calm and refreshing. I walked out feeling relaxed and fresh. My Shiatsu massage far exceeded my expectations; I will definitely come back.

Angela’s massages left me feeling not just relaxed, but also physically centered. Spending time with Angela getting a message allowed me to be present in the moment and left me feeling ultimately more energized and more engaged.

I never even heard of Shiatsu Massage or Reiki until I met Angie. She has brought me such great relief from my body aches and my chronic back pain.

I got into a car accident 12 years ago and as a result, I have permanent back damage. I was supposed to go through treatment but never did and so I’ve long had constant throbbing in my lower back. The first time I got a massage from Angie I had hoped that it would make me feel better. I never imagined how much relief I would get from the pain; it felt nonexistent after the massage and the rest of my body felt great too. I could feel the energy flow through me as if she had opened my arteries and veins more and I felt more alive. I have so much more energy and sleep better after a massage by her. (I get a massage every 2 or 3 weeks and my life feels so much younger now. Thanks!)

Angie has such a natural and intuitive ability in healing work. She has successfully treated my back, neck pain and headaches with Shiatsu and Reiki. Her kind, loving nature is very supportive and encouraging. She has such a gift for connecting the spiritual with physical manifestation and assisting people to release pain and let go of what no longer serves them. I recommend her without reservation to anyone seeking relaxation, rejuvenation or clearer insight into their life journey.
